Hypothyroidism is a lifestyle and metabolic disorder and caused by insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland.

This is due to decreased secretion of the thyroid hormone.

DIETARY GUIDELINES:
Balanced Alkaline Diet for hypothyroid should include:
Low calorie food items, as Basal Metabolic Rate is slow in hypothyroidism calories should be reduced to 30 to 40 percent of normal requirements.
Adequate protein and fibre to meet normal requirements.
Fat should consist mainly from vegetable oil.
Iron rich food
Antioxidants ,which protect the body from damage.
Gluten free food items
Selenium rich food eg. chicken, Garlic, Onion, Dairy products
Foods to avoid for:
Cassava
Coffee
Spinach (steamed/boiled form can be used)
Kale
Soya, Tofu
Cruciferous veggies like flower, cabbage, Broccoli which interfere with production of thyroid hormones
Refined flour and related products
Saturated Fats
Limit use of sodium chloride
